LEWIS KRAMER, CPA TO RECEIVE 2009 URBACH COMMUNITY BUILDER’S AWARD
NYCON also announces a posthumous 2009 Urbach Award to Harold Mandel, CPA
Albany, N.Y. – September 16, 2009 – Lewis Kramer, CPA of Chappaqua, NY is the 2009 recipient of the Michael H. Urbach, CPA Community Builder’s Award. The New York Council of Nonprofits, Inc. (NYCON, formerly CCSNYS) and the New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants (NYSSCPA) co-sponsor the sixth annual award. The award recognizes exemplary achievements of a certified public accountant who serves on the board(s) of directors of charitable organizations.
Lewis “Lew” Kramer, CPA, recently retired in July 2009 after an almost 40-year career with Ernst & Young (E&Y). He held many positions within the firm- from client service to senior technical to senior leadership positions and is experienced at engaging senior management and boards in discussions encompassing key business issues such as strategy, governance, financing alternatives, acquisitions, restructuring, and personnel matters. His experiences included working with the largest global clients of E&Y, such as the Global Client Service Partner (GSCP) for Verizon Communications and served as the GSCP overseeing the Internal Audit Outsourcing for Xerox Corporation.
He has served in a variety of board leadership roles over an extended period of time, including Chairman and Treasurer of the United Neighborhood Houses (UNH); New York March of Dimes; Baruch College Auditing Advisory Board and Theaterworks USA. He is also the President of the Fairview Country Club, in Greenwich, CT, in the second year of his 3-year term.
Charles Hull, Executive Director of Theaterworks USA said in endorsing Kramer’s nomination for this award, “Lew was a tremendously valuable member of our Board in the early years of Thearterworks USA.” Hull added, “As the first CPA to join our Board, he was brought on to head our finance committee and to help give us financial stability. He was great to work with and did an admirable job.” During the last 3 years of his career, Lew was appointed to the E&Y US Executive Board, which is the E&Y US governing body, consisting of 18 senior partners of the firm. He was also recently named to the board of directors and appointed to the audit committee of L-3 Communications, $15 billion aerospace and defense company that is ranked 171 in the Fortune 500.
The late Harold “Hal” Mandel, CPA was selected to receive to a 2009 posthumously Michael. H. Urbach, CPA award. He retired after over 30 years as a CPA and shareholder (partner) of Urbach, Kahn, and Werlin, P.C. (now UHY Advisors) in Albany, NY, a prominent international firm of certified public accountants, where he had the responsibility for providing accounting and consulting services to nearly 60 organizations annually. Hal specialized in nonprofit organizations and government entities. He was a member of the New York State Society of CPAs, where he served on the committees on Tax-exempt Organizations, Nonprofit Accounting, and Public School Accounting. He was also a certified government financial manager and a member of the Association of Government Accountants.
Hal served on the NYCON board for 15 years including four years as Treasurer, three years as the 2nd Vice President and one year as the 3rd Vice President. He also served as a founding board member of Council Services Plus and was a board member of the Capital Repertory Theater Company, Daughters of Sarah Nursing Home Foundation and Historic Cherry Hill Museum House.
He was a close friend and colleague of Michael Urbach, CPA, and was instrumental to the creation of the Urbach Award. In retirement, Hal resided to Florida and continued to volunteer his time to work with nonprofit organizations in Palm Beach county. “He firmly believed in the value and importance of community-based nonprofits and was always there for the Council,” stated Doug Sauer, CEO of NYCON.
The award is named in honor of the late Michael H. Urbach, CPA, former partner of Urbach, Kahn and Werlin, former NYS Commissioner of Tax and Finance and Chair of the State Employees federated Appeal. He served on the boards and as an Officer on numerous New York State charities including NYCON, Equinox, Inc., Albany Jewish Community Center, Albany Boys and Girls Club, United Way of Northeastern NY and St. Peter’s Hospital Associates, among many other organizations.
The 2009 award will formally be presented at the Annual Meeting of NYCON slated for the afternoon of October 1st at Mohonk Mountain House, New Paltz, New York.
